Early Life and Musical Roots

Born in Saint-Denis, Paris, in 1962, Angelo Debarre is one of the world’s most celebrated Gypsy jazz guitarists. Raised in a Romani family where music was a way of life, Angelo picked up the guitar at the age of eight, inspired by the timeless sound of Django Reinhardt. His deep roots in Gypsy tradition and his unmistakable flair have made him a leading figure in the revival and evolution of the Django legacy.

Career Breakthrough and Rise to Fame

By his early twenties, Angelo had already honed an extraordinary technique and unique voice on the guitar. In 1984, he formed his first group, the Angelo Debarre Quintet, and was soon discovered by Serge Camps at the Parisian café La Roue Fleurie, a legendary meeting place for Gypsy musicians. From there, his reputation spread rapidly across Europe and beyond.

Recordings and Collaborations

Over the decades, Debarre has recorded numerous acclaimed albums, including Gypsy Guitars, Caprice, and collaborations with fellow greats such as Tchavolo Schmitt, Ludovic Beier, and Florin Niculescu. His playing is characterized by dazzling speed, lyrical phrasing, and a deep, authentic swing — a combination that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Angelo Debarre Today

Today, Angelo remains a true ambassador of Gypsy jazz, balancing heartfelt tradition with creative innovation. His performances are masterclasses in rhythm, melody, and soul, connecting directly with listeners whether through fiery solos or tender ballads.
